Prescription Treatments

Explore effective prescription options for moderate to severe acne

When OTC products aren't enough, prescription treatments can make a significant difference. Oral antibiotics like lymecycline and doxycycline tackle acne-causing bacteria from within, while topical retinoids such as adapalene and tretinoin increase skin cell turnover. Combination products like Duac Gel provide dual-action treatment.

Oral Antibiotics

Lymecycline and doxycycline are typically prescribed for 3-month courses. They should not be taken long-term due to the risk of antibiotic resistance. Always complete the course as directed.

Topical Retinoids

Adapalene and tretinoin are vitamin A derivatives that unclog pores and promote skin renewal. Start with a low strength and apply at night, as they can increase sun sensitivity.

Combination Therapy

Duac Gel combines clindamycin (an antibiotic) with benzoyl peroxide. This dual action targets bacteria while reducing blockages, and the benzoyl peroxide helps prevent antibiotic resistance.

Quick tips

  • Apply topical retinoids at night and use SPF 30+ sunscreen during the day.
  • Take oral antibiotics with plenty of water and avoid lying down for 30 minutes afterwards.
  • Doxycycline should be taken with food to reduce stomach upset.
  • Inform your prescriber of any other medications you are taking, including the contraceptive pill.
