The NICE appraisal of the 12 SQ-Bet sublingual immunotherapy tablet for moderate to severe allergic rhinitis or conjunctivitis caused by tree pollen, updated to cover people aged 5 and over rather than adults alone. It treats the underlying allergy rather than suppressing symptoms, takes about three years, and is aimed at people not controlled by antihistamines and a steroid nasal spray used properly.

NICE extends allergy immunotherapy guidance to children

Updated final draft guidance recommended itulazax for children aged 5 to 17 with allergic rhinitis or conjunctivitis caused by birch pollen, extending a treatment previously recommended for adults. Relevant context for parents currently buying antihistamines season after season: for severe, poorly controlled allergy there is now an NHS route that is not symptom relief.

NHS antihistamine prescribing rose 18% in five years

NHS Business Services Authority analysis found 16,900,477 antihistamine items prescribed and dispensed in England in 2025/26, up 18.2% from 14,296,821 in 2021/22. Fexofenadine has been the most dispensed antihistamine since 2021/22. Demand is growing for medicines most people also buy over the counter — which makes the price you pay a choice rather than a given.
