A&E opt-out blood testing has found around 2,000 undiagnosed HIV cases in four years
NHS England reported that routine opt-out testing in emergency departments across high-prevalence areas has identified about 1,900 people with HIV since April 2022. Strikingly, 93% of those diagnosed had no record of a previous HIV test — the programme reaches people who would not have tested through any other route. It now covers 88 areas of England.
STI diagnoses in England fell 8.3%, but syphilis rose among heterosexual women
UKHSA's latest annual figures show gonorrhoea down 10.9% and chlamydia down 10.3%, while syphilis in heterosexual women rose. Chlamydia remains 45% of all new diagnoses, and rates stay disproportionately high in under-25s.
