Effective, clinician-approved treatments for common STIs

Most bacterial STIs, including chlamydia and some cases of gonorrhoea, are curable with a short course of antibiotics. Treatment is straightforward and highly effective when taken as directed. Online pharmacies can prescribe and dispense treatment following a positive test result and clinical consultation, offering a convenient and discreet route to getting treated.

Azithromycin for Chlamydia

Azithromycin 1g as a single dose is one of the standard treatments for uncomplicated chlamydia. It is taken as a one-off dose, making it highly convenient. Current BASHH guidelines also recommend doxycycline as a first-line option.

Doxycycline Treatment Course

Doxycycline 100mg twice daily for 7 days is recommended by BASHH as first-line treatment for uncomplicated chlamydia. It is also used for certain other infections. Take with food and plenty of water, and avoid prolonged sun exposure during treatment.

Complete the Full Course

Even if symptoms improve quickly, it is essential to complete the full course of antibiotics. Stopping early can lead to treatment failure and contribute to antibiotic resistance.

Quick tips

  • Avoid sexual contact for at least 7 days after completing treatment (or until a partner has also been treated).
  • A test of cure is recommended 3 to 5 weeks after treatment for chlamydia to confirm the infection has cleared.
  • Doxycycline may reduce the effectiveness of the combined contraceptive pill — use additional contraception during treatment.
  • If symptoms persist after completing treatment, contact your prescriber or local sexual health clinic promptly.
