While there are no strictly forbidden foods on Mounjaro, certain types of food can significantly worsen gastrointestinal side effects or undermine your progress. Because tirzepatide slows gastric emptying, your digestive system processes food differently — and some foods simply do not agree with this new reality.
High-Fat and Greasy Foods
Fatty foods are the number one culprit for nausea and discomfort on Mounjaro. Because your stomach empties more slowly, greasy meals sit heavily and can trigger:
- Nausea and queasiness
- Bloating and abdominal pain
- Acid reflux or heartburn
- Diarrhoea or oily stools
This includes takeaway favourites like fish and chips, curry with heavy cream sauces, fried breakfasts, and fast food. You do not need to eliminate fat entirely — healthy fats from avocado, olive oil, and nuts are beneficial in moderation — but large amounts of saturated and trans fats are best avoided.
Sugary Foods and Drinks
Mounjaro is licensed for type 2 diabetes management, and even when used primarily for weight loss, it affects blood sugar regulation. Consuming large amounts of sugar can cause uncomfortable blood sugar fluctuations. Limit:
- Fizzy drinks (regular and some "diet" varieties that may cause bloating)
- Sweets, chocolate bars, and biscuits
- Sugary breakfast cereals
- Fruit juices (eat whole fruit instead for the fibre content)
Highly Processed Foods
Ultra-processed foods — ready meals, processed meats like sausage rolls, and packaged snacks — tend to be high in salt, sugar, and unhealthy fats while being low in nutrients. When your overall food intake is reduced on Mounjaro, filling up on these items means missing out on essential vitamins and minerals.
Carbonated Beverages
Many Mounjaro users report that fizzy drinks — even sparkling water — cause uncomfortable bloating and gas. With delayed gastric emptying, the carbonation has fewer places to go. Still water, herbal teas, and diluted squash are gentler alternatives.
Spicy Foods
Spicy dishes can exacerbate acid reflux, which is already more common on tirzepatide. If you enjoy spice, try milder versions of your favourite dishes and see how your body responds. You may tolerate moderate spice perfectly well, but fiery vindaloos might be off the menu for now.
Alcohol
Alcohol deserves particular caution and is covered in detail in our separate guide. In brief, Mounjaro can intensify the effects of alcohol and increase the risk of low blood sugar, particularly if you have type 2 diabetes.
Pay attention to how individual foods make you feel. Everyone's tolerance differs, and keeping a brief food diary for the first few weeks can help you identify your personal triggers.
