Hair thinning or increased shedding is one of the side effects some Mounjaro users report, particularly during the first few months of treatment. While it can be alarming, it is usually temporary and treatable.
Why Does It Happen?
The hair loss associated with Mounjaro is almost always telogen effluvium—a condition where a larger-than-normal number of hair follicles enter the resting (telogen) phase simultaneously. It is triggered not by the drug itself but by rapid weight loss and the caloric deficit that accompanies it.
Other contributing factors include:
- Nutritional deficiencies—particularly iron, zinc, biotin, vitamin D and protein.
- Stress—the physical stress of significant body-composition change.
- Hormonal shifts—fat tissue produces oestrogen, so losing substantial fat can alter hormone levels.
Is It Permanent?
In the vast majority of cases, no. Telogen effluvium is self-limiting. Hair typically begins to regrow within three to six months once your weight stabilises and nutritional intake improves. If shedding persists beyond six months, consult your GP to rule out other causes such as thyroid dysfunction or anaemia.
What Can You Do?
- Prioritise protein: Aim for 1.2–1.6 g of protein per kilogram of body weight daily. Hair is made of keratin, a protein, so adequate intake is essential.
- Check your levels: Ask your GP for a blood test covering ferritin, vitamin D, zinc and thyroid function.
- Take a multivitamin: A good-quality supplement containing biotin, iron and zinc can help fill gaps. Look for products available from UK pharmacies that meet recognised standards.
- Avoid crash dieting: Even though Mounjaro suppresses appetite, try to eat at least 1,200–1,500 calories per day (or as advised by your dietitian).
- Be gentle with your hair: Avoid tight hairstyles, excessive heat styling and harsh chemical treatments during shedding periods.
When to Seek Help
If you notice patchy bald spots rather than diffuse thinning, see your GP promptly—this may indicate alopecia areata or another condition unrelated to weight loss. Your prescriber can also discuss whether slowing the rate of weight loss through dose adjustment might be appropriate.
Psychological Impact
Hair loss can take a real toll on self-esteem, especially when you are already navigating the emotional ups and downs of significant weight change. Consider speaking to a counsellor or joining a UK-based Mounjaro support group where others share similar experiences. Knowing you are not alone can make the waiting period far more manageable.
Hair loss during Mounjaro treatment is understandably distressing, but with proper nutrition and patience, most people see a full recovery.
