Losing a substantial amount of weight on Mounjaro is life-changing, but it can also bring unexpected physical changes. Loose skin is the most common concern, but stretch marks, changes in body shape and even shifts in how clothes fit can all affect confidence.
Why Loose Skin Happens
Skin is elastic, but that elasticity has limits. When you carry excess weight for years, the collagen and elastin fibres in your skin stretch and can become damaged. When the underlying fat is lost—especially quickly—the skin may not have enough time or structural integrity to shrink back.
Factors that influence loose skin include:
- Total weight lost: Losing more than 3–4 stone increases the likelihood significantly.
- Age: Skin elasticity naturally decreases with age.
- Genetics: Some people’s skin bounces back more readily than others.
- Speed of loss: Slower weight loss gives skin more time to adapt.
- Smoking: Smoking damages collagen and worsens skin laxity.
What Can Help
- Strength training: Building muscle fills out some of the space left by lost fat and improves overall body composition. Aim for two to three resistance sessions per week.
- Adequate protein: Protein provides the amino acids needed for collagen synthesis. Target 1.2–1.6 g per kilogram of body weight daily.
- Hydration: Well-hydrated skin maintains better elasticity. Drink at least 2 litres of water per day.
- Moisturise: While no cream can eliminate loose skin, keeping skin moisturised with products containing hyaluronic acid or retinol may improve texture and appearance.
- Collagen supplements: Some emerging evidence suggests hydrolysed collagen peptides may support skin elasticity, though results vary.
Surgical Options
For significant excess skin that causes chafing, infections or psychological distress, body contouring surgery (such as abdominoplasty or brachioplasty) may be considered. On the NHS, this is sometimes available if loose skin causes documented medical problems, but waiting lists are long and criteria are strict. Private options in the UK typically cost £5,000–£12,000 depending on the procedure.
Managing Expectations
Some degree of loose skin is a normal consequence of major weight loss and is not a failure. Many people find that their skin continues to improve gradually for up to two years after reaching their target weight. Focus on the enormous health benefits you have gained rather than pursuing aesthetic perfection.
