How to Prepare Before Starting Mounjaro

Starting Mounjaro soon? This preparation guide covers everything from stocking your fridge to arranging sharps disposal before your first injection.

Preparation makes the first few weeks of Mounjaro treatment much smoother. Here is a practical checklist to complete before your first injection arrives.

Medical Preparation

  • Baseline measurements: Record your weight, waist circumference, blood pressure and, if possible, recent blood work (HbA1c, liver function, thyroid). These give you a baseline to measure progress against.
  • Medication review: Tell your prescriber about every medication and supplement you take. Mounjaro can affect the absorption of oral contraceptives and some diabetes medications.
  • Set realistic goals: Clinical trials show average weight loss of 15–22% of body weight over 72 weeks. Aim for steady, sustainable loss rather than dramatic drops.

Stock Your Kitchen

The first weeks often bring nausea and reduced appetite. Have these on hand:

  • Ginger tea, peppermint tea and flat lemonade for nausea.
  • Plain crackers, rice cakes and dry toast for light eating.
  • High-protein, easy-to-eat foods: Greek yoghurt, eggs, tinned fish, pre-cooked chicken.
  • Electrolyte sachets (available from any UK pharmacy) for hydration.
  • Plenty of bottled or filtered water.

Set Up Your Injection Space

  • Clear a shelf in your fridge for storing unused pens (2–8°C). Do not freeze them.
  • Order a sharps bin from your pharmacy or council before the pens arrive.
  • Keep alcohol swabs, a small mirror (if injecting into your abdomen alone) and plasters nearby.

Plan Your Schedule

Choose your injection day carefully. Many patients prefer Friday evening so that any initial nausea falls over the weekend. Avoid starting the week before a holiday, wedding or important event where nausea could be disruptive.

Arrange Support

  • Tell a trusted friend or family member that you are starting treatment. Emotional support matters.
  • Download a medication-tracking app or set recurring phone reminders.
  • If your prescriber offers follow-up calls or check-ins, book them in advance so you do not forget.

Know What to Expect

The most common early side effects are nausea, reduced appetite and occasional diarrhoea. These typically ease within two to four weeks. Knowing this in advance prevents unnecessary worry and helps you push through the adjustment period.

Consider Your Mental Health

Weight-loss journeys can be emotionally complex. If you have a history of disordered eating, body dysmorphia or anxiety around food, discuss this with your prescriber before starting treatment. They can connect you with appropriate psychological support. Some UK online pharmacies also offer access to health coaches or counsellors as part of their Mounjaro treatment packages.

A little preparation goes a long way. Walk into your Mounjaro journey informed, stocked up and ready to succeed.
