Treatments Compared

Finasteride vs minoxidil — oral vs topical options

Finasteride and minoxidil work through completely different mechanisms, and many men use both together for the best results. Understanding how each treatment works helps you make an informed decision based on your hair loss pattern, budget, and preferences.

Finasteride — blocks DHT

Finasteride works by blocking the conversion of testosterone to DHT, the hormone responsible for shrinking hair follicles. It is most effective for hair loss at the crown and mid-scalp. One 1mg tablet daily is the standard dose. Side effects are uncommon but can include reduced libido in a small percentage of men.

Minoxidil — stimulates growth

Minoxidil increases blood flow to hair follicles and extends the growth phase of the hair cycle. It works on any area of the scalp and is applied topically once or twice daily. No prescription is needed.

Dutasteride — stronger DHT blocker

Dutasteride blocks more DHT than finasteride and is sometimes prescribed off-label for hair loss in the UK. It is typically considered when finasteride alone has not produced sufficient results.

Quick tips

  • Combining finasteride and minoxidil is more effective than either alone
  • Minoxidil foam dries faster; solution is usually cheaper
  • Dutasteride is not first-line — discuss with your prescriber before switching
  • Give any treatment at least 6 months before judging effectiveness
